Sheet metal fabrication company on track to meet green goals
Plate manufacturing company Alpha Manufacturing is on track to exceed this year’s stringent environmental targets.
Having obtained the ISO 14001 certificate for environmental management systems through the implementation of robust systems, Alpha’s strategy includes three key areas: reduction of electricity and energy consumption, reduction of general waste products and therefore waste going to landfill, and increasing the rate of waste recycling.
This year, Alpha worked to reduce its electricity consumption by almost half a million kWh, through a project to convert all the lighting in the premises to CEMA LED lighting. This allowed the company to exceed its annual kWh electricity target by more than 13%.
After opting for three scoops and a mini-compactor to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, the company has now reduced its carbon footprint by 75%, or the equivalent of 150 tonnes per year.
Alpha is now classified as a âzero landfillâ company, in collaboration with the main waste management company Veolia, which stopped using landfills about 18 months ago because its waste is now transformed into derived fuel reuse (RDF). Alpha wanted to use the RDF process as it replaces fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil, using filtration to produce less CO2 than usual methods, which means it is cleaner and less harmful to the environment. the environment.
Scoops are used to mass recycle Alpha’s waste such as cardboard and plastic. The implementation of this equipment, as well as the creation of a corporate culture around reuse and recycling, allowed Alpha to exceed its target of 55 tonnes of recycling by the end of 2021.
With a project underway to switch to solar power over the next four years, this significant investment will result in Alpha’s installation of 1960 rooftop solar panels. This will hopefully allow the facility to be fully self-sufficient in its energy consumption within six years.
